Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating after a fatal collision involving an RCMP vehicle.
SIRT said in a news release on Friday the 31-year-old man from Clearwater River Dene Nation was hit on Highway 909 on Thursday and he died at the scene of the collision.
RCMP members provided first aid and paramedics also arttended.
Buffalo Narrows RCMP were first called about 1:45 a.m. on Aug. 29 to a domestic disturbance at a residence in Turnor Lake. Two members of the RCMP responded, each operating a fully-marked RCMP truck, SIRT said.
Around 3 a.m., while still responding to the initial call, a second call was received reporting a man lying on the road south of Buffalo Narrows on Highway 155. Shortly after, another caller phoned to report that the man lying on the highway had already been hit by a vehicle.
After dealing with the initial domestic disturbance call, one RCMP member left Turnor Lake, heading southbound on Highway 909 toward Buffalo Narrows to deal with the report of the man laying on the road.
The second RCMP member left Turnor Lake a short time later with one man in custody related to the domestic disturbance call. SIRT said that while the vehicles were travelling southbound on Highway 909 through foggy conditions, the first RCMP vehicle hit the man who died. SIRT said it was not the same man that was reported in the previous calls about a man on the highway.
A SIRT team consisting of the civilian executive director and four investigators has been sent to Buffalo Narrows and Turnor Lake to examine the conduct of police, and a community liaison will also be appointed, SIRT said.
No further information will be released at this time, SIRT added, and a final report will be issued within 90 days of the investigation ending.
