Once the snow melts, construction season in Saskatchewan appears as quickly as the weeds, and this summer was no exception.
Kurtis Doney, deputy city manager for the city of Regina, said workers have been making good progress.
“We’ve had a good construction season … and are making good progress,” said Doney.
“There is still more to do … and construction will continue on many projects until late October,” he said.
Some of the projects the city has seen this summer are the installation of a water main along Ring Road between Winnipeg and McDonald streets, and between Albert and Broad streets. McCarthy Boulevard was reduced to one lane in both directions for the southwest sewer upgrade project, and the 11th Avenue revitalization project also moved into a new phase.
When it comes to the speed of the construction in the city, Doney said that the weather did put a damper on some projects.
“We’re going right on schedule across the board. We had a good start … to many construction projects. A little bit of rain in June delayed a few things, but it’s been hot and dry in July and August, so it’s good construction weather,” he said.
Doney said if snow does hit in September or October, some projects will be put on hold until the weather becomes warmer again in 2025.
“It depends on every project. Some projects are two-year projects, o they’re just naturally going to go until the weather turns and then we’ll pick them up in the following year.
“If a project was planned to be done this year and we had a really early winter and didn’t get it done, then we’d have to carry that over and make sure it’s done in the early spring,” said Doney.
