Police on Tuesday provided more information about what happened when a man from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation was shot and killed by a Saskatchewan RCMP officer on Sunday.
Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) said in a news release that Shellbrook RCMP were called to an address where a 27-year-old woman had been assaulted with a machete around 6:45 a.m on Sept. 8 and that she was taken to hospital.
About 7:20 a.m., SIRT said two members of the RCMP arrived at a second residence where the initial assault was reported to have occurred looking for a 31-year-old man.

Shortly after their arrival, a confrontation occurred between the man and RCMP members which caused the officers to withdraw and seek cover.
SIRT said the officers at the scene called for backup and contained the residence. During the time that the residence was contained, the man exited and returned to the residence on several occasions and engaged in several verbal exchanges with police.
Additional RCMP officers arrived at the residence, and around 8:40 a.m. a confrontation occurred between the man and police, during which one member of the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team fired a single round from a service firearm, striking the man.
RCMP members provided first aid to the man, police said, and called an ambulance, but was declared dead at the scene. His family has been notified of his death.
On Monday, Saskatchewan RCMP said an officer was receiving medical treatment for “non-life-threatening injuries that occurred during the police response.”
Police did not describe the nature or cause of the officer’s injuries and an injured officer was not mentioned in the SIRT release on Tuesday.
SIRT, a civilian-led body which is required to investigate whenever a person suffers serious injuries or dies while in police custody or as the result of an officer’s actions, will continue to investigate and will release a report no more than 90 days after that investigation ends.
