A 68-year-old Weyburn man is dead after a collision between a semi and SUV on the Regina bypass east of the city on Friday, and five drivers were issued tickets for using a cell phone while driving past the collision.
White Butte RCMP said in a news release the collision happened around 8:30 a.m., and that an eastbound SUV and eastbound semi had collided.
Police said the five passing drivers were given tickets for driving without due care and attention, with fines ranging from $580 to $2,100.
They said that driving while using a cell phone is extremely dangerous and drivers need to remember the “immense impacts capturing these vulnerable and sensitive moments can have on loved ones and people involved in collisions”.
The woman driving the SUV was taken to hospital with unknown injuries, while the man was declared dead at the scene. His family has been notified, police said.
The semi driver was not injured, and eastbound lanes of Highway 1 were reduced to a single lane until mid afternoon.
White Butte RCMP continue to investigate with the assistance of a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist.
