Elections Regina is hoping for a strong turnout in the Queen City’s municipal election.
Advanced polling for the civic election kicked off Friday in Regina, as residents choose their mayor, councillors, and school board trustees.
Amber Ackerman, Elections Regina’s assistant returning officer, said the organization is hoping voter turnout will be higher this time around after only 21 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot in the city’s 2020 election.

“I would say it’s pretty hard for anybody not to know that there’s a municipal election that’s taking place. There’s lots of signage out in the community,” Ackerman said. “We have a fantastic website that gives voters the information they need to know, and I think voters need to understand that it’s important to come out and demonstrate their democratic right to vote.”
She said it’s important that people understand both the services provided by the city and what elected officials can do for them.
“Their elected officials are their voice, and the services that the city provides are your water services, park and recreational services. Those things are important things to the residents here in Regina.”
Ackerman added that municipal officials also act as advocates with higher levels of government.
“If you have concerns at the provincial or federal levels, have those conversations with your elected officials. They are your advocate to bring some of those matters forward for change,” she said.
Ackerman said it should not take very long to vote.
“You shouldn’t be at the polling station for longer than five minutes,” she said. “It’s really quick and easy. I strongly encourage everyone to come out.”
Advanced polls are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Monday. Locations include City Hall, Northgate Mall, Victoria Square Mall, the North West Leisure Centre and the South Leisure Centre.
There is also a drive-thru option at City Hall from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Election day is set for November 13.
