The ongoing Canada Post strike isn’t just stopping personal mail and deliveries; it’s also having an effect on charities like Carmichael Outreach.
Carmichael is a registered charity in Regina that provides various services to people in the community who are experiencing poverty and homelessness.

For the last few weeks they’ve been contending with a lack of donations as well as a high volume of visitors due to the freezing temperatures.
Chrysta Garner is development coordinator with Carmichael Outreach, and said that the ongoing postal strike has had quite an effect on their organization.
She said that in November, the organization would usually send out a Christmas appeal to members in the community and the surrounding areas in an effort to collect donations. With the ongoing mail strike, which began Nov. 15, the group was unable to send out those appeals.
In an effort to reach out to the community for help, Garner said that they’ve turned to some alternatives.
“We’ve reached out to the media. We’ve been posting it all over our socials, and also we’ve asked volunteers to come forward and help us personally deliver door-to-door what they can manage to do. So I think we’ll have about 5000 mailers delivered out here by mid-December and then, hopefully, when people are able to donate, they can either go online, or use the QR code,” said Garner.
She said that the loss of the appeal means the group’s funding would take a heavy hit.
“The funds that we bring in for our appeal are funds that we use for our programming in the future. So right now, we’re doing okay. We will be okay for Christmas. It’s in the further months that we’re going to see the impact,” said Garner.
She said that the lack of donations is concerning.
“We do a very good job at budgeting and making sure that we have what we need. But we don’t want to have to cut back any of the programs or cut back the meal portions, because right now, food security is our biggest program that we use those funds towards,” she said.
“With the way that we have things worked out, we’re able to supply a very nice, nutritious meal to people, and we don’t want to have to cut that back to maybe just a sandwich or whatever else is more cost effective. We’d like to continue supplying better, more nutritious, longer-lasting meals,” said Garner.
People can donate through the organization’s website, as well as their social media pages. The group is also in need of donations of winter clothing, with details also on the website.
