A drone carrying drugs, tobacco, cell phones and chargers dropped off the package at the Saskatchewan penitentiary near Prince Albert earlier this fall.
This happened on Sept. 30 when an inmate intercepted the drone carrying the package.
Staff quickly became aware of the incident and seized the items.
The items seized included 83 grams of methamphetamine, cannabis concentrate, tobacco, cell phones and charging cables, and SIM cards. The total estimated value of the items is $369,350.
The Correctional Service Canada (CSC) and Saskatchewan RCMP’s Prince Albert General Investigation Section (GIS) began investigating the incident.
On Dec. 3, three inmates were arrested and charged in relation to the investigation.
Two of the men were charged with one count each of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
The other man was charged with one count of trafficking methamphetamine.
All three men remain in custody.
The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) uses several tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions like ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors.
CSC is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.
