“As a result of continued investigation, the two occupants of the vehicle were detained for a drug trafficking investigation,” the Mounties said in a statement.
“During a search of the vehicle, officers located eight kilograms of fentanyl hidden under the spare tire.”
According to the RCMP, the seizure of fentanyl – an exceptionally powerful synthetic opioid – means that “potentially millions of doses” may have been taken out of circulation.
Two Calgary men, ages 26 and 28, were arrested at the scene and are now facing trafficking charges. Both men appeared in a Swift Current courtroom on Thursday.
According to police, the men said they were en route to Regina at the time of their arrests.
Superintendent Grant St. Germaine, who leads Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services, said the seizure is a significant one.
“Keep in mind that only a few grains of fentanyl is enough to potentially cause a fatal overdose. We have prevented potentially millions of doses of this dangerous drug from entering our communities,” St. Germaine said in a statement.
“I hope this is a message to others who choose to transport illicit goods in our province. Our officers are watching out for you.”
