It was not the start the University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey team was hoping for.
The team fell to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (UBC) 5-4 in overtime in game 1 of the Canada West semifinal series at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon on Friday.

The Thunderbirds jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after forward Josh Williams beat Huskies net-minder Roddy Ross, but the Huskies would answer back with three straight goals — from captain Justin Ball, Chantz Petruic and Landon Kosior – giving them a 3-1 lead late in the second period.
The Thunderbirds responded, however, with three straight goals of their own to give UBC a 4-3 lead in the third.
The Huskies Carson Latimer tied it up late at 4-4, but a costly turnover gave UBC forward Sasha Mutala the puck all alone in front of an empty Huskies net in overtime.
Game two on Saturday is a must-win for the Huskies.

Meanwhile, Huskies men’s volleyball team the Huskies men’s volleyball team needed a win to keep their season alive against Trinity Western Spartan to decide which team moves on to the Canada West semifinal.
The Huskies took the first set 33-31, and the teams would then trade sets until the Huskies won the fifth and final set 15-10 forcing game three on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Huskies women’s volleyball team stunned the number one seed University of Fraser Valley Cascades in their Canada West quarterfinal series on Friday in Abbotsford, B.C., on Friday.
Fraser Valley dominated the first set winning 25-11, but the Huskies rallied to pulled out three straight sets to complete the upset 3-1.
The Huskies can book a spot in the USports Nationals with another win on Saturday.
