Police said that officers attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle in the area of Halifax Street and 2nd Avenue in Northeast Regina but the driver evaded police at a high speed and no pursuit was attempted.
Police did, however, call in the force’s Aerial Support Unit (ASU), which began to track the vehicle from the air.
The plane followed the suspect vehicle onto the Regina Bypass, before it continued towards Balgonie. Near a home, police said the vehicle began to slow down and a black bag was thrown out of the driver’s side window. ASU then saw the driver and a passenger get out of the vehicle and run towards the home.
A short while later officers, including members of the RPS K9 Unit, SWAT team and RCMP, were able to successfully track both suspects.
Police said the woman was bitten by a police dog and taken to hospital, where she was treated for injuries.
RPS said they later found a firearm inside the discarded bag.
The man and woman were both charged with ounauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession in a vehicle, possession of a firearm knowing it is unauthorized, possession of a weapon obtained by crime, careless storage of a firearm and possession of property obtained by crime over $5000.
The man was also charged with three counts of possession of firearm contrary to a prohibition order, failure to comply with conditions, flight from a peace officer and operating a vehicle dangerous to the public.
The woman was also charged with two counts of possession of firearm contrary to a prohibition order, two counts of failing to comply with a probation order and obstructing a peace officer
Both appeared in Regina Provincial Court on March 10.
