Regina city council will revisit a 2021 decision to incorporate fluoride in the city’s water supply.
A notice of motion submitted by Ward 10 Coun. Clark Bezo prompted the scheduling of a special council meeting on May 2.
The City of Regina was set to begin the community fluoride program in 2026 once the upgrades to the Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Plant were finished.
Bezo’s notice of motion recommends the city postpone its fluoridation project “until there is conclusive evidence there are no significant neurotoxic effects or other bodily harms.”
“This proactive step will safeguard the health of our community and particularly that of our children,” the notice read.
A full meeting agenda is scheduled to be published at 1 p.m. on Friday, according to the city.
The deadline to register is April 28.
The decision to add fluoride to the water has been previously endorsed by organizations such as the College of Dental Surgeons of Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Dental Therapists Association and the Canadian Dental Association.
Bezo’s notice of motion argues that citizens would not be given informed consent of the planned installation of fluoride.
