Some sugar, heat and a little bit of dough, and a Saskatchewan town managed to raise $10,000 with a pie auction last weekend.
Dozens of people packed into the community hall in Fleming on April 13 for the auction, featuring a real live auctioneer.

“People show up 45 minutes early before so that they can look at all the pies and then sit down and visit with friends and neighbours. It’s a great opportunity for us to get together and have an evening out together,” organizer Cindy Green said.
The live auction saw 63 pies up for grabs. Green said there were a lot of pies that sold for more than $100, but the top seller was a coconut cream pie that got to $500.
The auction also includes other desserts, and Green said the second spot went to a set of cinnamon buns donate by the Wiebes who run Berry Good Farms, which earned a top bid of $360.
“They are a local couple from near Rocanville and they just have the best pastries and their cinnamon buns are amazing, so $360 was pretty spot on for their cinnamon buns,” said Green.

The pies and desserts are baked by people in the community and surrounding area, and Green said there’s likely a bit of competition for whose pie can get the highest bid.
“It seems each year we get better and better pies, so I think that for bragging rights people want to sell the highest bidder, for sure,” she said.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic they’ve been holding a virtual auction as well, which featured 36 pies this year.
Green said they get bidders from all over, even 100 km away and people who’ve moved away from Fleming often put in bids.
“It gives them the opportunity to still support Fleming, their home community,” she explained.
She didn’t have the final tally yet, but Green said between the virtual auction, the live auction and donations for a kids auction, the final amount raised would be more than $10,000. Last year the events raised around $8,000, according to Green.
She said the money goes Fleming Community Organization to fund events in the community and upgrades at the community hall — last year they bought all new chairs, hosted exercise classes for adults and crafting events for the kids.
