The Regina Pat Canadians are back in the Telus Cup gold medal game.
The Saskatchewan male U18 AAA Hockey League champions defeated the Elgin Middlesex Canucks 5-0 on Saturday in Chilliwak, B.C. to advance to the finals of Canada’s male U18 AAA hockey championship. It’s the first time the Pat Canadians have been in the final since 1999 — the last time the club won the tournament.
Regina goaltender Taylor Tabashniuk recorded the shutout, stopping all 28 of the shots he faced.
Earlier in the tournament, when these two teams met in the round-robin, Regina won the game 6-2.
This time around in the semifinals, Regina used a three-goal first period to set the tone that would follow throughout the game.

Forward Chase Surkan opened the scoring for the Pat Canadians with his goal coming on the power play.
Later in the period, Ethan Young scored to extend the Pat Canadians’ lead. Just 1:29 later, Young scored his second of the period to push the lead to three.
In the second period, Cooper Bratton potted another goal for the Pat Canadians to extend the lead to a pair.
Then in the third period, Cash Lanigan put another one past Canucks goaltender Dyaln Durno, who faced 40 shots in the contest.
Maddox Schultz, a 15-year-old Regina product, only had a single assist in the game. Schultz, who is expected to be the first overall draft pick in this year’s WHL Prospects Draft, leads this year’s tournament with 17 points. The Regina Pats will get the first chance to select Schultz with the draft after winning the WHL Draft Lottery.
The Regina Pat Canadians will meet the Chevaliers de Lévis in the finals for the gold medal. The Quebec representative defeated the Moncton Flyers 3-0 to advance to the finals.
When the two clubs met in the round-robin, it was the Chevaliers who emerged victorious with a 6-2 win.
This is the Pat Canadians’ tenth time at the tournament — just one of seven programs to ever reach the tournament a double-digit number of times. Regina has won the tournament four times (1983, 1988, 1994, 1999) prior. If they win a fifth title, they will be tied with Notre Dame and Séminaire Saint-François for the most ever.
The gold medal game will take place on Sunday at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on TSN+.
