Regina mayor says it’s business as normal during heat

It’s been a hot month in Saskatchewan with heat warnings and a power consumption record.

The city of Regina is on track to break a 130 year old dry weather record for the month of July.

But, the ongoing heat and lack of rain isn’t impacting the city’s water levels just yet.

Mayor Michael Fougere said its been incredibly dry around the city but the only impact seems to be on city parks, where some are getting a little brown.

“This is the weather we’ve had for well over a month, its been very, very dry. It’s beautiful weather if you like sun and all that, but for producers around the province it’s probably becoming a bit of a worry,” Fougere said.

He said he had no worries about water as Buffalo Pound still has water in the reservoir.

“There’s no indication that that is going to happen at all and certainly for any fire bans in the city we have not heard about that either, so until we hear about that, just go about your business,” Fougere said.

If the heat continues, fire bans in the city could be put into place, but for Fougere that’s not on the table just yet. He said when it gets this dry, a tiny spark can cause a grass fire which can wipe out a whole park.

“At the moment that’s not on the table, but again, we’re vigilant and keep watching, and if that happens we’ll certainly let the public know but for the moment it’s normal,” Fougere said.

With heat warnings coming and going, it’s tough to predict what the future will look like for the rest of the summer.
