Folk Festival performer Carol Rose promotes inclusivity

Positivity and togetherness — those are two of the things Saskatchewan singer/drummer, poet and storyteller Carol Rose hopes to radiate through her artistry at the 48th annual Regina Folk Festival.

Performing with her drum in hand, she said being able to connect and share her Indigenous culture on stage is powerful.

“The whole message of inclusivity is here at the Regina Folk Festival — we realize we are on Treaty 4 territory and that it’s important to reflect the population as it truly is,” she explained.

Having been a part of the crowd in previous years, she said she’s thankful to now be able to perform.

She added that her performances on the children’s stage in Victoria Park are extra special because she gets to give some kids their first introduction to Indigenous culture.

“I have nursery rhymes that are now drum songs and it’s fun — it’s just so fun, and we get to dance,” she laughed.

Through her poetry, storytelling and — ultimately — her music, she said her shows come with a message.

“We need to be kind to one another,” she said. “We need to remind each other about the ‘I love yous’ and the ‘you’re important in my lifes.'”

On Sunday, Carol Rose hits the children’s stage at 12 p.m. and then stage two at 3:05 p.m.
