Most CFL fans probably thought they would never have to learn the disgusting facts about the Art Briles story.
Briles is the former head coach of Baylor University’s football team. Although he was never found guilty of any crimes, Briles was fired by the university for ignoring sexual assault charges and gang-rape accusations against members of his football team. Just another example of the winning-at-all-costs philosophy of U.S. college sports.
How could it affect the CFL? Well, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats tried hiring Briles as an assistant coach and threw the football world and much of Canada into a tizzy. On the heels of its diversity programs and its stance against domestic violence, this made the entire CFL look bad. Initially complicit and tremendously naive about the uproar it would cause, the CFL ultimately recanted and forbade the hiring.
When head coach Kent Austin stepped aside last week, it looked like things couldn’t get worse for the winless Ticats. Oh boy, was that wrong.
