It’s about time.
The Labour Day Classic for the Saskatchewan Roughriders the last two seasons has almost felt forced out of tradition, meaningless outside of that little taste of prairie pride between the two markets of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
The Riders went into 2015 0-9. Their coach and general manager had just been fired and everyone knew a win or a loss on that day didn’t really matter. But the win was nice anyway.
In 2016, it was only one victory for the Roughriders going into the Labour Day game again. It wasn’t confirmed but Rider Nation wasn’t holding out hope of a miraculous playoff run.
But this year, it means something. The Riders are 4-4 and riding a two game winning streak and can really do themselves some good to move into fourth place in the West Division and taste a playoff spot for the first time in two-and-a-half years.
The Bombers are riding a win streak themselves and could keep pace for a crack at first place in the West.
It’s going to be a good ol’ prairie rival showdown and it’s great a win means something more than just price once again.
And I can’t wait.
