The provincial government has declared Sept. 6 Kenny Shields Day in Saskatchewan, in honour of the Nokomis-born lead singer of Streetheart.
Acting Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport, Christine Tell, made the announcement on Tuesday.
“I request the citizens of the Province of Saskatchewan to recognize this day,” Tell proclaimed in a news release.
Shields was known for being one of the biggest recording artists to hail from Saskatchewan, producing award-winning rock n’ roll tunes in the 70s and 80s, and going on to be inducted into the Western Canadian Music Association Hall of Fame in 2003.
On July 21, 2017, Shields died in Winnipeg at the age of 69.
The rock legend will be laid to rest in Saskatchewan on Sept. 6, which is why that date was chosen to recognize him.
