There will be more needles for many Grade 6 boys this year.
As announced in the provincial budget, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is now free for Grade 6 boys as part of the province’s school immunization program.
It was already available for girls in the same grade.
“Our province has one of the most comprehensive vaccination programs in Canada,” Health Minister Jim Reiter said in a news release. “We are pleased to provide $750,000 annually for this additional investment in the health and well-being of our children.”
Around 7,500 boys in Grade 6 will be eligible for the free vaccine, as well as the province’s 7,500 Grade 6 girls.
