Sporting events have been cancelled for such events before. Football and baseball rescheduled games following the 9/11 attacks. NHL games were postponed following terrorist events at the Boston Marathon and Ottawa’s Parliament Hill. Recent hurricanes forced pro sports to alter their schedules.
Since the NFL was criticized for playing games two days after U.S. president John Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, sports leagues have made tough decisions following disasters and tragedies.
Sports are often seen as an escape, a way to help deal with and forget about the horror.
Because the U.S. is averaging more than one mass shooting per day through the past year and a half, not every game can be cancelled. But there will be tributes.
