Slower summer picks up for roofers following windstorm

While most of the summer has been slow for Wheatland Roofing, business has picked up since a wind storm ravaged the province.

Owner Mike Smith said that the hot, dry weather has been good for many, it wasn’t necessarily good for business.

“Really with no wind this summer or rain this summer, really nobody’s roof was having a problem,” Smith said.

He added that the ground shifting did cause a few problems for people’s roofs.

That all changed when hurricane-force winds blasted the province earlier in the week.

“Its been absolutely crazy, we’ve received hundreds and hundreds of phone calls for missing shingles,” Smith said.

“What we’re trying to do right now is prioritize the repairs by looking at each roof that has damage, if they’re missing shingles and we can see bare plywood our priority right now is to try to at least get a temporary patch on the roof to keep it water-tight.”

He said they often see an increase in October because people who put their roofs off all summer want to get work down before the first snowfall.

Smith said they are making a push to complete all projects for the year so they don’t have to reschedule any for next year.

He also encouraged people to check their roof once a year to ensure it hasn’t gotten damaged.
