Visitors to the Saskatchewan legislature will notice a new addition to the majestic marble interior.
Metal detectors will be up and running within the next week at the provincial building in Regina.
The change follows a recommendation made by a security review commissioned after the 2014 shooting on Parliament Hill.
“After Parliament Hill, after the shooting London, England, it is just indicative of the world and what’s going on now,” sergeant-at-arms Terry Quinn said.
“We’re not trying to stop anybody. We want visitors to come for tours or meeting, it just may slow things down a little bit.”
Only visitors will go through the device.
Saskatchewan’s politicians, along with others who work in the building, will not be subject to the metal detector.
On busy days, like budget day where several hundred people attend proceedings, staff will use security wands in addition to the metal detector.
Saskatchewan’s politicians return to work in the legislature Thursday.
As per tradition, the fall sitting will begin with the speech from the throne.
