Get ready for a big shift in the weather as the heat wave in Saskatchewan gives way to a strong cold front overnight.
Saskatoon is expected to hit 31 C on Friday and Regina is forecasted to reach 33 C. On Saturday, the temperature is expected to drop to 17 C in Saskatoon and 24 C in Regina.
That major swing in temperature could bring some nasty weather with the possibility of severe thunderstorms later in the day.
“The ridge of high pressure that has been dominating the province for the last several days and bringing the unseasonable hot air into the province is finally going to give way,” said James Cummine, meteorologist with Environment Canada.
Cummine expects eastern Saskatchewan will see the worst of the severe weather. Once the rain pulls out on Saturday, temperatures will rebound to normal summer weather.
Record temperatures for southern Saskatchewan for this week are in the low-to-mid thirties.
Four communities broke records on Thursday:
- Leader set a record of 37.5 C (previously 37.4 C)
- Meadow Lake 31.8 C (previously 31.7 C)
- Swift Current 35.7 C
- Kindersley 35.3 C (previously 35 C)
Cummine said some communities may break records again on Friday.
