Three CFL teams are already thinking about next year. Montreal, Hamilton and B.C. are out of the playoff picture and doing the post mortem.
When looking at a solution, they need look no further than the two teams in the playoffs that weren’t last season: Saskatchewan and Toronto.
The Riders invested in the turnaround of Chris Jones and it took a year before his plan took hold. The Argonauts waited to hire proven winners in Marc Trestman and Jim Popp to turn their team around in one year.
When you’re handicapping which teams can make the quick move and which teams will be more of a Rider rebuild, it looks pretty easy to tell.
Hamilton and B.C. clearly have the talent to compete and may need a different voice. June Jones’ message was much more appealing to the players in Hamilton than Kent Austin.
And the Montreal Alouettes are a complete rebuild. Too many veterans, not enough ready now depth.
But whatever path these teams take, they have to remain patient. It paid off for Saskatchewan in Jones plan, and it paid off for Toronto to make sure they hired the right people.
