A lost dog that survived in the wild for three months has found his way home to his family in Swift Current.
On Aug. 22, Scott Moss sent out a heartfelt plea on Facebook asking for help to find the family’s dog, Charlie.
Charlie and their second dog Tak had been with the family since they were puppies in 2009, and managed to get out of the family’s yard in Swift Current.
Moss heard that the dogs were seen running around the city and had made their way down a grid road. Tak was found the next day on that grid road, but the dog had been hit and killed by a vehicle. The next day Moss took to social media and his story spread quickly.
The family kept searching for Charlie, with help from friends and strangers, as their Facebook post continued to circulate.
“I never in my life thought that he would have been able to live in the wild for three months on his own,” Moss told 980 CJME on Tuesday.
But that’s exactly what happened.
On Nov. 13, Moss and his wife Kandace were playing with their 18-month-old son when they heard a strange howling sound from the front yard.
Moss initially thought it sounded like a coyote. Then they opened the door to see their lost dog sitting in the front yard beside their son’s sled.
“It was like he found home and he was screaming like, ‘I’m home,’” Moss described.
It was a joyful reunion for the whole family – which also happened to land on the couple’s anniversary.
“We didn’t even have time to react he came in so quick. As soon as the door was open he was in our house and it was like he never left, he was just rolling around ecstatic,” Moss said.
“It made our day. The best anniversary gift we could get is seeing him home.”
Moss said his young son recognized Charlie was back, and was jumping and shaking with excitement.
“(Charlie’s) thinner and he’s got some war wounds, but he’s good. He’s healthy and happy,” Moss said, adding the dog was loving life as they gave him a bath to get rid of the fleas.
Moss said Charlie seems to be getting along great with the family’s new puppy, even sleeping in the same room together. He added they will be spoiling Charlie for a long time.
