Regina Public Schools is cutting 22 teaching positions as a result of this year’s budget.
It was one of the decisions made following a $9.5 million loss in revenue from the province.
Funding levels were also impacted by a change to the education funding formula and a change in our education property taxes are collected.
The provincial government will now collect the revenues and give them back to school division in grant form.
As a result of this, the division already announced changes to kindergarten days, bus transportation zones and a phasing out of pre-school programming for special needs children.
In the 2017-18 fiscal year, the division said it expects an increase in expenses because of changes to PST, the opening of five new schools and expected enrolment increase of 576 students.
The division is projecting a deficit of $1,073,153 on expenses of $239,547,688.
The budget still needs the approval of the Education Minister Don Morgan, who had previously said he wouldn’t approve the budget if the cuts to the special needs programming were included.
