Next time you hear anyone question why athletes aren’t more loyal, remember Eli Manning.
There is no reason to bench Eli Manning that makes sense. When the New York Giants put Manning in the game way back in 2004, they had a veteran Kurt Warner leading the team after they traded for Manning at the NFL Draft.
Warner knew he was out as soon as he struggled or they deemed Manning ready.
The fact they are going to start Geno Smith makes zero sense. Their future, if anybody, is 3rd round pick from earlier this year, Davis Webb. But that is not the move they are going to make.
Instead, they leave the veteran teary-eyed in the locker room feeling like he’s bearing the brunt of bad coaching, bad offensive line play and injuries to two-star receivers.
This isn’t the way you treat people if you’re looking for loyalty in return.
And that’s just it. Loyalty in sports is nice when it happens but for the most part, it’s not really there. Not even a franchise quarterback gets any.
Congrats to whichever team lands Manning, they’ll be a better team. I’m not so sure I can say the same for the Giants without him.
