The Regina police major crimes unit and the provincial coroner are investigating a death after a body of a woman was discovered in the attic of a house on Athol Street.
Police were called just before 3 p.m. after confirming that the person found in the home was deceased. Forensic investigators spent the next couple of hours going in and out of the house taking notes and pictures to document evidence.
One woman told a News Talk Radio reporter that she lives in the house. She would not answer any questions on the record, but she looked shocked and confused as she talked with a police officer on the scene.
A few hours later, Regina Fire & Protective Services brought three fire trucks and an aerial platform to the scene. Fire fighters used a chainsaw and hatchet to cut a large hole through the roof to gain access to the attic. A forensic photographer documented the scene, then the coroner supervised as the body was removed on a stretcher.
The operation attracted a lot of attention from neighbours who stood across the street watching and taking pictures. At one point, the fire trucks were moved to block the view from children across the street.
“I’m shocked, I’m very shocked,” said Brenda Racette, who lives nearby and knows the family who lives in the house.
“It is actually kind of normal around here, but I wasn’t expecting to see this.”
Darlene Larose says she heard the family just moved in a few months ago.
“I don’t even know what to say, it’s just shocking to see,” she said. “You know it hurts too, eh, that there’s so much violence and so close to home. I just live down the block a ways.”

Other neighbours commented that it’s not exactly strange to see the major crimes unit in the area.
RPS says after securing the scene, the first priority will be determining the gender and identity of the person, and notifying the next of kin.
