Peter Chiarelli has had some influence on the NHL’s wacky Western Conference standings.
As the Edmonton Oilers’ general manager, Chiarelli has dealt away the secondary scoring his team sorely lacks behind first-line superstar Connor McDavid. So it was goodbye Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and, to a lesser degree, Nail Yakupov. Chiarelli acquired Cam Talbot from the New York Rangers, wrongly believing he would be a franchise goalie.
Two teams Chiarelli helped with trades are having impressive seasons.
When Chiarelli was the Boston Bruins’ GM, he dispatched Tyler Seguin to the Dallas Stars, who have bounced back this year into wild-card contention.
More noteworthy are the Winnipeg Jets, who are led by captain Blake Wheeler and sit atop the West standings. Wheeler used to be Boston’s property until Chiarelli dealt him to the Atlanta Thrashers before that franchise relocated to Winnipeg. Wheeler may be playing better than anybody in the league right now.
Meanwhile, Chiarelli’s Oilers are floundering as they fall out of playoff contention.
