Man charged after ‘dangerous driving’ on Ring Road

After a car was clocked speeding more than 180 kilometres an hour in a construction zone in Regina, a man is now being charged.

On June 11, 2017, police were monitoring traffic in the southbound lanes of the Ring Road using laser speed enforcement. The area being monitored was a construction zone with workers present.

Around 8:30 p.m., one of the officers heard the roar of an engine coming in the northbound lanes. Officers saw a maroon-coloured Nissan travelling at a high rate of speed and clocked the vehicle speed at 183 km/h, about 50 metres per second, in the construction zone.

Officers couldn’t get into the northbound lanes to follow and there were no other officers on the Ring Road so the driver could not be stopped.

Police said the vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic.

Richard Alexander Smolek Harty, 26, was charged with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

The vehicle, a 2006 Nissan 350Z, was impounded for 30 days.

Smolek Hart will make his first appearance in court on July 27.
