It was the corrupt punishing the corrupt on Tuesday when the International Olympic Committee smacked Russia with their harshest sanctions to date for their 2014 doping scandal.
No Russia at the 2018 Olympics.
And as obvious as it was to levy such a suspension, don’t think it was made with ease.The IOC’s thirst for money and ratings wouldn’t have made it easy for them to take one of the biggest countries in the field out of the games. But thankfully they did.
The IOC leaving it up to the individual sports federations for the summer games two years ago was a cop out and gave more reason to believe ‘clean sport’ wasn’t a top priority for the Olympics governing body.
While I don’t think the IOC went far enough, as they’ll still allow Russian athletes to compete under the Olympic flag as ‘neutral’ athletes, I was pleasantly surprised they did the obvious.
Now I expect Russia to take a play out Donald Trump’s play card, and just say ‘oh yeah, well we weren’t coming to your silly games anyway’, but the IOC had the right people in mind.
Those clean athletes, who don’t have to look at their Russian competitor in a few months wondering if they’re competing on a level playing field.
