Regina rally continues call for action to help refugees

A few dozen protestors in Regina joined other rallies across Canada Tuesday evening to continue to demand more action from the Canadian government to help refugees.

Tuesday marked the third such rally recently in Regina. People stood on the centre meridian of Victoria Avenue east of Scarth Street holding signs proclaiming “Refugees Welcome” and “No more deaths on sea shores”.

Syed Moazzam admitted that they expected more people to be at the rally, but with the rainy weather, he was pleased with the size of the group. He stressed that joining rallies to demand change are a great way to let politicians know that Canadians want the government to do more.

“(That) we want to take refugees in this country, not only this, but some kind of a policy that can stabilize those people and the country itself.”

Moazzam said change needs to be made soon to prevent further tragedies involving refugees, however, he stressed that a long-term solution is what Canada really needs.

For Evangeline Godrun, showing support for refugees seemed like the right thing to do as a Canadian.

“It’s a Canadian tradition,” she said. “Half the people are either indigenous at one generation or another, or immigrants or refugees.”

While most cars driving by the protestors simply honked their horns, Moazzum stressed that it’s easy for everyone to make a difference for refugees.

“The biggest thing is to convince our people to do financial support for those people, moral support, and ask government to implement some long-term policies.”
