Despite a possible cloudy sky, people in Saskatchewan should still have a good seat to a phenomenal outdoor show Wednesday night.
A geminid meteor shower is expected to light up the sky. These types of showers are often the best for viewers because the individual meteors are bright, and there can be up to 120 per hour at the peak time.
Astronomer Gary Boyle told the 980 CJME Morning Show the reason this meteor shower is more visually-appealing is because the pieces of meteor that burn up are slightly larger, and will hit the atmosphere at a lower speed.
“They’re very long, bright (and) graceful,” he said.
Viewing shouldn’t be too difficult either, with Boyle saying the only thing most people will have to do is look up.
“Set out lawn chairs, bring sleeping bags to stay extra warm, but they could flash, or vaporize, in the atmosphere in all directions.”
He said it’s best to watch the meteor shower with a few people because that way nothing will be missed.
“It’s always the case – when you see one in the east, you’re missing about four in the west.”
The weather is expected to be partly cloudy in Regina, which could hinder the experience.
The show is expected to begin between 9 and 10 p.m., with the peak occurring around 1 a.m.
