With Vince McMahon looking to reincarnate the XFL, it reminded me I once attended a real, live XFL game.
It coincided with a family vacation to Disney World, so as a Regina Leader-Post sports writer I legitimately obtained a press pass to watch the Orlando Rage defeat the visiting Chicago Enforcers 33-29 on February 3, 2001.
My newspaper story included the fact that, instead of a game-opening kickoff, the race between two players for first possession caused one of the participants to suffer a separated shoulder. Afterwards, I interviewed former Saskatchewan Roughriders Kelly Malveaux and Rich Young, blissfully unaware future CFLers like John Avery, Rob Murphy and Ricky Bell littered both dressing rooms.
The XFL was fun, entertaining football and a financial disaster. It lasted only one season, but many of its players and coaches appeared in the CFL, a league that McMahon and his World Wrestling Federation had once looked into purchasing.
The CFL is still standing. Hopefully, the XFL will be again, too.
