Regina city council to vote on temporary fix for Eastgate Drive access

After listening to what residents and the owners of various businesses had to say during recent public consultations, Regina city administration thinks it may have found a short-term fix to keep a portion of Eastgate Drive near Coleman Crescent open.

A proposal that will go before city council during a special meeting Thursday suggests a temporary east and west access across Pilot Butte Creek be approved. The route would replace the Eastgate Bridge by the end of December once the Victoria Avenue East project is complete.

The recommendation says that financing of up to $1.5 million from current, approved funds would be needed to install a temporary bridge over Eastgate Drive.

Businesses in the area had previously expressed concern over the city wanting to permanently close that portion of Eastgate, indicating their sales would dip because customer’s access would be restricted.

If the recommendation is approved, it would also require administration to come back to city council this upcoming spring with a permanent solution.
