More adult players are now investing in the protective equipment.
The Regina police Chief is warning any stores illegally selling pot to prepare for police enforcement in the coming months.
“The reality is, it is illegal right now to sell marijuana from a storefront,” explained Regina Police Service (RPS) Chief Evan Bray. “The law does not allow people to — even with a prescription — walk into a dispensary and purchase drugs, marijuana, even for a medical purpose.”
He said there is a strict procedure for filling medical marijuana prescriptions which allows dispensaries only to answer questions and connect customers with licensed growers who can then fill their prescription by mail.
“We have in Regina right now a handful of businesses that have set up, that have been granted a business license but then there’s, of course, a question of what is it that is happening in there. Are people are going in and purchasing marijuana, and if so, then they’re doing it illegally,” Bray explained.
Over the next several weeks Regina police will be working to educate the public, along with the owners and workers at these stores about the law before moving on to enforcement.
“If they are crossing that line, if they are selling drugs in their store, then there’s going to be consequences to that.”
Bray compared his message to warning drivers about radar for speeding, saying that anyone who gets caught after those warnings can expect full enforcement.
He also points out there are some people waiting to open businesses to sell pot when it is legal.
With the impending legalization of marijuana this summer, the province announced a vetting process and lottery system to award a total of six licenses for private stores to sell pot in Regina.
