A new report from the City of Saskatoon says it’s no longer realistic to open the Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan next year.
An update from the city’s administration said construction has been delayed because of confusion over the design plans, boosting the price tag by $3.5 to $4.5 million.
“These dollars are just an estimate at this time, nothing has been finalized and I’m still hopeful that we can raise funds,” Mayor Don Atchison said.
He added that he doesn’t think the city should pay if there were errors made by the architect, but it’s still too soon to tell.
The report said the administration is looking into whether it can spend less on furniture, fixtures and equipment and is talking with the gallery about securing more private funding.
The gallery was supposed to open next September, but a new date in early 2017 is being suggested.
The report goes to city council’s executive committee on Monday.
