He worked magic on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball—now, Duron Carter will be sticking around Riderville for another year.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced Monday Carter has inked a one-year contract extension.
“He enjoys doing things a little bit differently and I think that he’s kind of relishing the moment that he can do something that only Duron Carter can do,” said Chris Jones, Riders head coach and general manager.
Carter was the team’s top receiver in 2017 with 1,043 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
He also started one game at defensive back, collecting nine defensive tackles and one interception, which he returned 43 yards for a touchdown.
According to Jones, fans can expect to see Carter on both sides of the ball in the upcoming season. The player told reporters Monday he often doesn’t know his role in the game plan until just before kickoff.
“I take all the reps on offence and defence in practice,” he explained. “We don’t really talk about it during the week, and probably about 10 minutes before kickoff, coach Jones will come up … and tell me what we’re going to do.”
While Carter may have received more money if he had gone to free agency, finances aren’t the only motivation fuelling the athlete.
“I’ve always wanted to win a Grey Cup and, given the best opportunity right now, I think the Roughriders have a chance,” Carter said, who never got into contract talks with an NFL team.
“Everybody wanted me to come workout and everything, I just wasn’t in the workout mood to tell you the truth, everybody’s seen my tape.”
Carter added he wanted to take care of his body after playing the full CFL schedule of games.
The player found his way into the hearts of Rider Nation after giving a game ball to a cancer survivor early in the season and by treating fans in Toronto to a movie ahead of the east final.
Prior to joining the Riders in January 2017, Carter spent three seasons with the Montreal Alouettes before taking a brief break in 2015 to join the Indianapolis Colts.
