Dripping with sarcasm, somebody tweeted yesterday: “It’s great for the fans of the Vegas Golden Knights; they’ve waited a long time for this.”
Hahaha! A first-year NHL expansion franchise, the Knights, overtook the Tampa Bay Lightning for first place in the league’s overall standings. Their fans really haven’t waited for anything, but they have jumped aboard the Knights’ bandwagon. With rabid fan support and the team’s unbelievable performance, the Knights have become an amazing story.
Knights’ general manager George McPhee did an outstanding job of assembling players that were made available by 30 teams in the expansion draft.
Gerard Gallant, the head coach who was unceremoniously fired last year by the Florida Panthers, has certainly encouraged a dressing-room sentiment among players and coaches who weren’t wanted by their teams.
The Knights are desperately trying to prove people wrong. It’s a common philosophy in sports. And it’s working in Las Vegas.
