Oct. 21, 2015 is the day when characters Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel back to the future from 1985 in the movie Back to the Future Part II. Fans of the Back to the Future trilogy are celebrating the day on social media and with special events across North America.
Regina’s Josh Schattenkirk bought his own Delorean and rebuilt it out of parts because he could never forget the iconic time machine from the Back to the Future movies.
“I was about 10 or so, but the coolest part was always in the first one when it came out of the truck and there’s all this smoke,” he said.
When he’s driving the car, Schattenkirk says everyone he meets seems to really like it.
“They ask me things like does it have a flux capacitor? They ask me to take them to a certain date, stuff like that,” he said.
The 80s-era movie did predict things like drones, flat screen TVs and video goggles similar to Google glasses. The video conference call that future Marty uses in his home is also similar to Skype. But the movie missed out on some pretty big things like smart phones and the internet.
“Our skateboards still have wheels on them and everything doesn’t look like cheesy 80s,” Schattenkirk said.
The sequel also predicted that the Cubs would win the World Series, which could technically still happen.
Unfortunately we still do need roads in 2015, contrary to the iconic line of Doc Brown who tells Marty “where we’re going, we don’t need roads!”
“I think I let you guys down, I didn’t get the hover conversion in yet,” Schattenkirk joked. “But I am going to be driving around town a lot and I know it’ll bring a lot of smiles.”
Schatenkirk plans to be at the Galaxy Theatre in Regina for a special fan showing of the first two movies.

“That is a really good point, I don’t know, I guess that’s just how things worked out,” Schatenkirk commented. “Yeah, I think he’d feel right at home.”
