Pasqua hospital seeing an increase in mice

Regina’s Pasqua Hospital has been dealing with some unwanted guests this winter season.

The hospital has been seeing an increase in the number of mice in and around the facility since the barns were torn down at nearby Evraz Place due to upgrades.

“We’ve seen a significant increase in activity of rodents since that point in time,” said Terri Carlson, interim executive transition lead for clinical support for the Sask. Health Authority.

Carlson said they have contacted their pest control vendor, who has doubled the number of traps at entrance points. The vendor the health region hired for pest control will often come once a month to inspect the traps, but with the increase in mice, visits have become more frequent.

She also noted they have traps set up at points inside the building at all times and then add other trap locations if there is a sighting of a mouse.

If a mouse is found in one of the traps, or there is waste on the ground, Carlson said the environmental services staff are in charge of ensuring everything is disposed of properly.

“If we get a mouse in a trap we’re not going to call the vendor every time.”

The Pasqua Hospital has many different types of traps available on-hand if a situation gets brought to the attention of environmental services.
