It’s going to cost a bit more for Saskatchewan residents to keep the lights on at home.
The Saskatchewan government approved a 3.5 per cent rate increase for SaskPower Tuesday.
The increase will take effect March 1 and will be around a $4 increase on a monthly residential power bill.
“Every year, SaskPower is keeping up with new records of power consumption, while working to keep power rates as low as possible,” said Dustin Duncan, the minister responsible for SaskPower, in a news release.
“They face an important challenge to maintain and grow our power grid.”
During the application, the Crown corporation stated the rate increase would help with major maintenance and growth projects to reduce the number and duration of power outages.
SaskPower also noted it needs the money to modernize the power grid, meet the growing demand for more power and help the company reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
