One of Saskatchewan’s most-prominent First Nations chiefs has been arrested and is now facing four criminal charges.
Onion Lake chief Wallace Fox had been the subject of an RCMP investigation ever since an assault complaint on May 18. Police said the complaint originated from a home on the First Nation.
On Monday, Fox was arrested without incident and charged with two counts of assault, along with possession of a knife and uttering threats to damage property.
Fox was once the youngest First Nations chief in Canadian history.
His oil-rich band has been at the centre of many high-profile legal fights, most recently over the First Nations Financial Transparency Act.
Fox was quickly released on conditions. His first court appearance is on Dec. 16.
