Regina police are getting renewed funding to help battle gangs and nab online child predators.
A total of $4.6 million will be used to support 39 officers involved in the Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit and the Combine Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU). Part of the funding will also be used towards a program that deals with habitual chronic offenders.
Police Chief Troy Hagen clarified the funding isn’t new, it’s a continuation of the funds they’ve received before. He said that helps their efforts in these areas become more sustainable.
ICE aims to reduce the victimization and sexual exploitation of children. Officers in the unit investigate cases of possession, production and distribution of child porn and internet luring, while helping to find and charge sex offenders.
CFSEU, meantime, fights organized crime and gang activity.
Along with Regina police, both units are also made up of officers from Saskatoon and Prince Albert police along with members from the RCMP.
“Bad guys’ technology’s also advanced but we continually change our law enforcement tools to combat that,” said Staff Sergeant Ron Weir, provincial co-coordinator with ICE.
In a given year, he explained the unit will investigate about 200 cases. On average, upwards of 50 individuals are charged in relation to child porn or internet luring.
