Best of the luck to the Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts.
They are doing what so many teams have done before. Trying to pluck from the Bill Belichick New England coaching tree hoping to find fruit.
But let’s look at the head coaches that have come from that tree to see how it’s worked out so far.
Romeo Crennel – terrible. One above .500 season.
Charlie Weis was a failure running the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and his career was quickly over.
Josh McDaniels first go around as a head coach was two years Bronco fans want back.
Eric Mangini was no Man-genious.
Bill O’Brien was looking good in Houston until this four-win season.
Even Nick Saban, who coached with Belichick in Cleveland, didn’t have success in the NFL.
Belichick’s coaching tree to this point is nothing like his mentor, Bill Parcells. Parcells brought in Belichick, Sean Payton, Tom Coughlin and others.
So will Matt Patricia and Josh McDaniels pay off for the Lions and Colts? Judging by history, it’s doubtful.
