Regina’s outdoor rink season almost over: city

Outdoor rink season in Regina will soon be gliding to a halt.

According to Sean Raison, the city’s manager of business support for parks and open spaces, workers will clear the ice until Feb. 16, then it’s up to residents until it melts.

“Users can still use the rinks, as long as they use their own judgment. They may have to take their own shovel to clear the snow,” he said.

The Victoria Park rink, and eight others used by the Outdoor Hockey League, will be kept up until March.

Raison added the cold temperatures paired with little snowfall has made maintaining the rinks easier this season.

Elm tree pruning plans

Elm tree pruning to combat Dutch Elm Disease is currently underway in the Heritage neighbourhood. Specifically, north of Victoria Avenue and Railway Avenue, as well as from Broad Street to Winnipeg Street.

Residents are being advised to watch out for city crews out pruning, and to expect temporary road restrictions.

Raison said the City’s goal is to prune as many trees as possible before April, which is when the elm tree pruning ban kicks in.

Residents reminded not to litter

As spring slowly approaches, the City’s also reminding residents not to litter and to pick up after their pets while using parks and open spaces around town.

Raison said crews maintain the garbage bins scattered throughout the city during the winter.

“Use those containers with any kind of pet waste,” he suggested. “Any kind of litter is 100 per cent preventable and we ask people to do their part and help us keep our city clean.”
