Hughes doesn’t make an exorbitant amount, probably around $150,000 annually, but it convinced the Calgary Stampeders to trade him and it takes a bite out of Saskatchewan’s payroll.
After acquiring the most expensive player in the league, Zach Collaros, to be their starting quarterback, the Riders trimmed his salary about 20 per cent to $430,000. They’ll be paying Collaros nearly as much as the team paid last season for four quarterbacks.
Re-signing Duron Carter, Willie Jefferson and Brandon Bridge has padded a payroll that includes expensive veterans like Derek Dennis, Brendon LaBatte, Chad Owens, Pete Dyakowski, Rob Bagg, Bakari Grant, Henoc Muamba and Namaan Roosevelt. It will be fiscally difficult to keep them all.
