A Mike Sarada memorial day event is being held in Estevan Sunday, in honour of the city’s TS&M Bantam AA Bruins assistant coach killed in a crash along Highway 39 last month.
“This is meant to put a lasting spin or a lasting positive indication on his life — that’s what we’re trying to accomplish,” said the team’s head coach Tom Copeland.
On a grander scale, Copeland added the memorial’s a way to shine light on the importance of coaches everywhere.
“Hopefully, this is an opportunity for people to get in a room and understand that coaches are the most valuable component of any minor hockey system — any minor sports organization,” he said.
Estevan’s Affinity Place is hosting three hockey games on Sunday — including a memorial game, featuring all of Sarada’s old friends and team mates.
There will also be a presentation for Sarada’s family with a video tribute of the legacy he leaves behind.
Since Sarada was typically a quiet guy, Copeland joked he probably wouldn’t have been up for such a major event, but that hasn’t stopped people from organizing one.
“This lasting type of a thing wouldn’t have been anything he’d want to be around — but, tough, we’re doing it for him and we’re going to make him be remembered.”
