More adult players are now investing in the protective equipment.
A ceremony in Moose Jaw marked the official grand opening of the new Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital on Friday.
The hospital is named after long-time Moose Jaw physician Dr. F.H. Wigmorem who practiced as a general surgeon and the Chief of Surgery from 1939 to 1983. He died in 1999, but his family has ensured his legacy will live on.
The family contributed $2.5 million to the new hospital in their father’s name.
Speaking at the grand opening, his son, Dr. Fred Wigmore, called it a proud day for the family.
“Dad built two of the wings in the old hospital, so I know he’d be proud of this one now. When the opportunity came to have him honoured, it was great to have it accepted,” Wigmore said.
He added that he is thrilled with the design of the new facility.
“In my years of touring a thousand hospitals, this is the most intelligent hospital I’ve ever seen built in Canada,” Wigmore commented.
The new $100-million facility opened to patients on Oct. 19.
