CFL free agency today will be another day full of one-year deals.
And while it leads to plenty of names that are available to choose from and good for maybe radio show fodder, I don’t see how it is good business.
Teams sign a quarterback longer term. As much as you can say three years is long term.
How do fans know what jerseys to buy when they don’t know if the player is going to be gone next year?
The reason for so many one year deals is the NFL window being eliminated, as well as players wanting to be able to get a nice raise if they play well. The CFL isn’t exactly a get rich quick scheme.
Also, teams can’t really plan long term, in fact, the plans have to be quite short term. It’s why the Grey Cup finalists are usually pillaged in free agency because the other teams want winners.
The good news for the Riders, is they’re already well set with a solid roster before free agency even begins. Which is a far cry from where they were two years ago when Chris Jones gutted the Riders.
